Postpartum Doula Services

New moms are in a survival mode.

Elizabeth* is a new mom and has felt overwhelmed by how hard being a mom is.

She knew it’d be hard with sleepless nights and her baby needing her. But she never imagined feeling SO tired, anxious, overwhelmed, and could not manage everything from caring for her baby, to keeping the house up, to even thinking about self-care for herself.

The house has become a mess, with dirty dishes in the sink and piles of dirty laundry right next to the piles of clean laundry.

Elizabeth has been pushing through, trying to get some house tidying done while her baby sleeps. But she doesn’t get far before she finds herself in tears and sits down on the couch.

Elizabeth deserves support and help.

One day, in her postpartum support group, Elizabeth tells everyone how much she is struggling and doesn’t know what to do.

A very kind mom of two talks about the fantastic support a postpartum doula can provide and offers to pay for a few hours of a doula for Elizabeth. Elizabeth is so grateful that someone cares and wants to help her.

Right after the group meeting, Elizabeth heard about me, a postpartum doula, and called me. I graciously met Elizabeth in her emotional space, validating her experience and how hard the transition to motherhood is.

I got Elizabeth on the schedule for later that week. Elizabeth felt relieved that she would have help.

Deep relief is felt when support is there.

I arrived at Elizabeth’s house at 8:30 am. Elizabeth was so amazed that I put on a pair of house shoes and washed my hands without being asked!

Elizabeth started to feel sure that hiring a postpartum doula was the best choice for her. I checked in with Elizabeth to see her top priorities for today. Elizabeth shared how overwhelmed she was by the state of her house, that she was exhausted, and that she wanted to shower.

I grasped Elizabeth’s needs, and we developed a plan that involved my tidying up the house and focusing on the dishes and laundry. After I finished the dishes and tidied the kitchen, I cared for the baby and prepared a meal while Elizabeth showered.

Feeling refreshed, Elizabeth came out of the bathroom to find an excellent meal waiting for her on the table. She was so grateful because she had barely been able to eat a whole meal before she needed to care for the baby. But today, I held and took care of the baby while Elizabeth ate and enjoyed her meal.

Then, it was time to nurse.

Baby is hungry! I had already changed the diaper, so nursing was much simpler. I gave Elizabeth a few tips on nursing because she mentioned struggling with getting a good latch. The baby latched on, and Elizabeth released a big sigh of relief.

I gave Elizabeth a large cup of water with a straw during the nursing process. She felt cared for, supported, and grateful. While Elizabeth nursed, I tackled the laundry – washing the dirty clothes and folding and putting away the clean clothes.

I even organized a bit to help the flow of dressing the baby.

Just before leaving, I tucked Elizabeth and the baby into bed so they could nap. Elizabeth and the baby drifted off to sleep, feeling nourished, supported, and cared for.

Suddenly, things felt less stressful.

A couple of hours later, Elizabeth and the baby woke up. Elizabeth felt the difference in her body. She was a bit calmer, slightly more rested, and able to be more present with her baby.

Having a postpartum doula was the right decision for Elizabeth, and she felt grateful for finding tangible support that uplifted her emotions as well.

She’s glad she has another visit with me early next week, knows she can make it a few more days, and feels comforted knowing I will return soon.
